After entertaining numerous offers from colleges hoping to land his services, Griffin Law decided that there’s no place like home.
The East Hamilton High School junior golfer announced his verbal commitment to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga this week, choosing the Mocs over several SEC schools including South Carolina and Auburn.
“I’m really excited to make this decision,” Law said. “I’ve really connected with Coach (Blaine) Woodruff and Coach (Nick) Robinson and their coaching style. They understand the challenges of competitive golf and are focused on developing the over-all person on and off the golf course. That was attractive to me.”
Law has enjoyed an impressive summer that has drawn the attention of major colleges. He lost in a playoff to advance to match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Daniel Island Club in Charleston, S.C. in July, then finished tied for 11th a few weeks later at the Tennessee Amateur Championship hosted by Chattanooga Golf & Country Club.
Last October Law helped lead East Hamilton to a fifth-place finish at the TSSAA Class AA State Golf Tournament, having played in the event the previous year as a freshman.
With aspirations of taking his golf career to the professional level, Law recognized that no place offered the variety of championship level golf courses like Chattanooga.
“The opportunity to play at some of the best golf courses in the country here in my backyard was very attractive to me,” Law said. “The number of high-level courses in this area that are all different, allowing you to work on all aspects of your game, was definitely a plus for choosing UTC.”
Law, a member of Council Fire Golf Club, is hopeful that he can continue the same path as former Moc and current PGA Tour member Stephan Jaeger.
“Jaegar had a great year, and it’s encouraging to know he played at UTC and is doing so well,” Law said. “I’m looking forward to trying to follow that same path one day.”
