Using constant pressure, the Lee University men’s soccer team managed to pull out a 1-0 win over the University of Montevallo on Sunday afternoon at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. After a barrage of shots, Eamon McLaughlin scored his team leading fifth goal of the season to give the Flames the win.
Lee bombarded the Falcons all afternoon but were unable to find the back of the net. Ryan Chouyouti, David Koch, and Marcos Garcia all had shots turned away by the Falcons goalkeeper Tomas Valles who made nine saves in the loss.
Two other shots were cleared off the line by a Falcon defender.
The Flames finally broke through in the 76th minute. Chouyouti used his speed to breakaway down the left side and once he got in the penalty box, slipped the ball across the face of the goal to the waiting Eamon McLaughlin who slotted the ball into the net.
The Flames outshot the Falcons 21-5 in the contest including 12-1 in shots on goal. The second half had a lot of pressure with Lee attempting 14 shots.
The win breaks a four-game winless streak for the Flames and gave them their first Gulf South Conference win of the season.
Lee will head back on the road next week and will play at Spirng Hill College in Mobile, Ala. on Friday, September 29 at 2 PM.
Coach Derek Potteiger’s Thoughts:
“We talked about it before the game and at halftime that we wanted to keep a clean sheet and keep back the waves that might come.”
Defensively we have been very good this season with just a few lapses. Today we buckled down and had a great team performance.”
Sundays in the GSC are hard no matter who you are playing. Credit to the Montevallo goalkeeper he really kept them in the game. It went down to the wire and we pulled it out and I am very proud of our team.
