Lee Women Defeat Spring Hill College 3-1

  • Friday, September 29, 2023
The Lee women’s soccer team handily defeated host Spring Hill College on a steamy Friday afternoon at Library Field. The 3-1 victory improved the Lady Flames’ record to 6-0-3 overall and 4-0-1 in GSC play. The win sets up a meeting with the University of West Florida in Pensacola on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. The 4th-ranked Argonauts shut out Shorter University (5-0) on Friday and improved to 7-0-1, 4-0.

The Lady Flames wasted no time getting on the board when Alaysia Nye booted her shot into the left corner of the net for her sixth goal of the year at the 3:02 mark.
It was assisted by Tatum Miller’s third assist of the season.

Miller came right back with a goal of her own at 10:07 when she ripped a shot over the outstretched arms of Spring Hill goalkeeper Carlotta Stark into the back of the net. It was Miller’s second goal of the year. Ashley Eulo who turned in another solid performance from her midfield position, picked up her third assist of the season.

The Badgers got into the game in the 24th minute on a score by Poppy Binding. Her assist came from Hannah Fromme. It turned out to be only one of two shots of the entire game by the frustrated Spring Hill attack.

Lee salted the victory away at the 56th minute mark in the second half. Grace Berry did the honor with her third goal of the season. The score was unassisted. All totaled, Lee took 13 shots and placed a solid eight on goal. Badger keeper Stark was credited with five saves.

For the Lady Flames, Nye and Sophie Ramseur had two shots each while Sydnee Duncan, Juliana Lopes and Ruth Edrington had one shot apiece.

Lee’s domination was made clear when it had seven corner kicks for the afternoon and did not allow Spring Hill a single boot. The rugged Lady Flames were whistled for eight fouls and the Badgers two. Lee picked up one yellow card.

Coach Chris Hennessey’s thoughts:

“Spring Hill was a much-improved team. The playing surface was very hard and that made it hard to play from a technical standpoint. Our girls got the results and the three points we wanted. We went out and got the two early goals and got a little soft in letting them score, but our defense was really good the rest of the day. Right now, we will take our 6-0-3 record.

“Now we move onto face a West Florida team that might be even better than they were last year. They are ranked No. 4 in the nation for a good reason. We will travel onto Pensacola tonight and get the girls some rest and a good meal on Saturday evening as we get ready for Sunday’s game.”
