During my time in the Tennessee General Assembly, it was very common to run into famous people. The Capitol and Legislative Plaza was a frequent stop for music icons, movie stars and yes politicians.
One such frequent visitor was Governor Winfield Dunn. I was fortunate to have him visit my office on numerous occasions. We discussed pending legislation frequently. I remember the first time we met and I was star struck.
Over the years he was a source of wisdom that I could have never imagined. I would always thank him for sharing that wisdom and let him know how humbling it was to be the recipient of his knowledge. He would follow my appreciation statement with his tag line that he was so well known for: “Oh, you’re too kind!” he would say.
One of the most memorable interactions I had with the governor was when my good friend Colonel Mike Walker, of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, asked me to sing the National Anthem at the annual memorial service for fallen officers. After I sang the Starnes Spangled Banner, I returned to my seat on the stage, right next to Governor Dunn. He leaned over and said, “Wow Vince, I never knew you could sing so well.” I looked at him and said “Governor, you’re too kind.” He gave a little chuckle.
Governor Dunn, you were always very kind and I appreciate you’re mentorship through the years.
