The Covenant College women's soccer team visited Maryville for a rematch of the 2023 CCS Championship on Wednesday. Two late goals for Maryville turned out to be the difference as Covenant dropped to 2-1 in conference play.
Lila Wiley had the first shot of the game in the ninth minute, one that was saved at the bottom right of the goal. After a Maryville corner kick, Covenant keeper Brownwyn Kickasola made a save at the top of the goal in the 26th minute. Maryville took the lead in the 32nd minute as Hannah Smoot chased down a ball over the top and fired it into the right side of the net.
At the half, Maryville had outshot Covenant 7-3.
Kickasola tallied saves in the 47th minute and 69th minute to keep Covenant within one goal.
AnnaLi Weekley tied the match in the 79th minute with a curling right-footed shot from outside the box that snuck in just inside the right post. Four minutes later, Maryville got the winning goal, a second from Hannah Smoot after a long pass bounced over a Covenant defender that put Smoot in front of goal. Maryville added a third in the 89th minute as Sierra Lee cut in from the left side and fired a shot past Kickasola into the right corner.
Covenant moves to 5-17-2 all-time against Maryville. Maryville outshot Covenant 15-10 and had a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. Covenant had a higher foul count at 13-8.
The Scots hit the road again on Saturday to take on Asbury at 2 p.m.
