Bike Box Opens For Business

  • Monday, November 18, 2024

White Oak Bicycle Co-Op, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public health, access to bicycles, improving alternative transportation, and promoting bicycle safety throughout the region, announces the opening of a new distribution facility in Chattanooga.

White Oak Bicycle Co-op, in collaboration with iFixit, has developed a unique facility to distribute refurbished bikes to their community partners. The Bike Box is a refurbished shipping container donated and hosted by iFixit, a corporate sponsor of White Oak. The shipping container dubbed the Bike Box houses refurbished bikes that are ready for distribution, as well as a host of parts and tools for quick fixes.

"It is very exciting to be able to streamline our distribution process for our community partners," said Blake Pierce, CEO of White Oak. "Without the help of the team at iFixit, this would not be possible. iFixit has made a significant investment in their facility here in Chattanooga. We are thrilled to be part of their impact in this part of the community."

The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday at 812 E. 12th St. Joining the event will be Mayor Tim Kelly, representatives from the city of Chattanooga, the Chamber of Commerce, Kyle Weins, CEO iFixit, and a host of community organizations, including Bridge Refugee Services, Metropolitan Ministries, and Hamilton County Public Schools. All are welcome.

Thus far, in 2024, White Oak Bicycle Co-Op has refurbished and distributed more than 600 bicycles, with the goal of delivering 700 bikes in 2024. These bicycles are crucial in providing affordable transportation options and promoting healthy lifestyles across the community. Since its inception in 2020, White Oak Bicycle Co-Op has refurbished and distributed over 1700 bicycles into the community, significantly contributing to sustainable transportation solutions in Red Bank, Chattanooga, and beyond.

Anyone with a bike they want to donate can drop off the bike at any of our 12 collection sites from Signal Mountain to East Ridge. www.whiteoakbicycle.org
