Longtime Teacher Was Member At White Oak United Methodist 52 Years

Marjorie Allene Wiggins Grant passed away, November 5, 2024, at the age of 90.

She was born in Paris, Tennessee, on September 16, 1934. She graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1952 and from the University of Chattanooga in 1956. She was a teacher at Rossville Elementary, Central Elementary, Red Bank High, and Red Bank Elementary Schools.

She married Jay Montgomery Grant, Sr. on June 14, 1959. They were married for 61 years until his death in 2021.

During her whole life she faithfully served Christ and was an active member of St. Elmo Methodist Church until 1972, when she and her family joined White Oak United Methodist Church, where she was a member for 52 years. She was also a member of the Highlander Class where she served in several offices, and was active in the United Methodist Women, the Worship Committee, and the church administrative council for many years.

For many years she was a member of the Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, as was her mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Montgomery Grant, Sr., her parents, Dr. Jasper Marshall Wiggins and Merle French Wiggins, brother William Jasper Wiggins and wife Lore Wiggins.

She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth “Betsy” Grant of Monteagle, TN, sons Jay “Monty” Grant, Jr. and wife Melody of Ocala, FL, and David and wife Bobbie Grant of Spring City, TN and three granddaughters Meredith, Ashley and Sophia Grant, sister-in-law, Doris Anne Grant DeLoach and husband David of Waco, TX, and sister-in-law, Molly Bischoff Link of Aurora, CO, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, November 12, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13, at White Oak United Methodist Church, 2232 Lyndon Avenue, Red Bank, TN.

Burial will be in the Forest Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holston Home for Children, 404 Holston Drive, Greeneville, TN 37743.
