On the back of a season-opening victory over Shorter on Monday, the Chattanooga women’s basketball team will look to keep the team’s momentum rolling as Tennessee Tech is set to come to town to take on the Mocs this Thursday, November 7.
The Mocs (1-0) built up a 17-point victory over the Hawks on Monday, notching head coach Deandra Schirmer’s first win as the program’s head coach. Now, the Mocs will need to roll up their sleeves as the team welcomes its first Division I foe of the season to McKenzie Arena in the Golden Eagles (1-0).
Tip off for Thursday’s game is slated for 6 p.m.
ET, and fans not in attendance will be able to follow along via ESPN+ or by tuning their radio to WFLI 96.1 FM/100.3 FM/1070 AM or by downloading the Varsity Network app.
An important notice for fans planning to attend Chattanooga women's basketball games this season: over the course of the 2024-25 season, Chattanooga women's basketball will only be using Gates 1 & 3 of McKenzie Arena for fan entrances. Gate 2 will not be available, with the only exceptions being on days in which WBB and MBB will have true doubleheaders (Nov. 14 against Troy, Feb. 8 against Western Carolina). Gate 2 WILL be available for all Chattanooga men's basketball home games this season.
The Mocs are fresh off a 66-49 victory over Shorter in the team’s season-opener on Monday, a win which marked head coach Deandra Schirmer’s first at the helm of the program. The Mocs saw a strong rebounding performance help to propel them past the Hawks, with UTC out-rebounding Shorter 40-23 for a +17 rebounding margin. This marked the largest rebounding margin for the Mocs in a game since Feb. 19, 2021, when Chattanooga posted a +20 rebounding margin (48/28) against UNCG. Some standout performers for the Mocs on Monday were Karsen Murphy, who logged a career-high 16 points that include making four three-pointers on the night, as well as freshman Gianna Corbitt who wrapped up her collegiate debut with a team-high 11 rebounds paired with six points. Corbitt’s 11 boards were the first double-digit rebounding performance by a UTC freshman since Raven Thompson had 10 against ETSU on March 3, 2023.
The Golden Eagles were also able to notch their first win of the season on Monday, downing Emory & Henry 82-54 in Cookeville. TTU showcased physicality on the boards while forcing many turnovers out of the Wasps in the victory. The Golden Eagles ended up finishing the game having out-rebounded Emory & Henry 44-33, while also forcing 25 turnovers out of the Wasps when all was said and done. A total of four Tennessee Tech players ended their nights in double figures with freshman Chloe Larry leading the team with 17 points. The duo of Reghan Grimes and Taris Thornton would each log 16 points of their own with Thornton coming off the bench to do so, while Peyton Carter rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Golden Eagles with 11.
The last time these two teams met came last year, when the Mocs delivered a blowout win over the Golden Eagles, 70-45, on November 15, 2023 nearly one year ago. The runaway victory by UTC marked the first time ever that the Mocs had gone into Cookeville and defeated Tennessee Tech, having previously gone 0-12 against TTU on the road up until that point. Overall, the series now stands 7-19 in favor of the Golden Eagles with Chattanooga having won two of the last three matchups between the squads. The Mocs are currently 6-6 when hosting TTU, with UTC’s last home loss against the Golden Eagles coming on December 17, 1997.
