In arguments before the Supreme Court regarding challenges to Tennessee’s ban on gender transition treatments for adolescents, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, an Obama appointee, likened the side effects of transgender medical procedures on minors to the side effects of aspirin (WFIN 95fm 12/4/24).
Apparently the justice is either unfamiliar with one or the other or both which calls into question whether she is competent to adjudicate the case currently before the court. I will not detail any surgical or chemical treatments done on minors in the name of gender transition. The reader may research that for themselves.
Aspirin has been linked to Reye’s Syndrome in children. Stanford Medicine website clearly states, “don’t give aspirin to a child younger than age 19.” The statement does add the phrase, unless the child’s physician directs you to do so. That’s because the risk of mental retardation is too great to take the chance.
Justice Sotomayor is said to be diabetic. Aspirin, even low-dose, is usually not recommended for diabetics. Her comments indicate to me she is likely reaching the point of retirement from the court. I suggest February 2025.
