Transition planning is not a new concept. It is a term used in “Best Practices” for administrators and managers across the business spectrum. Therefore, when I read about County Mayor Wamp considering Janie Parks Varnell as the new county attorney, I was excited. There was a plan in place ahead of our long-term county attorney’s departure, when his contract expires at the end of June.
Not only was there a plan, but there is a candidate being considered that has deep roots in the community. Ms. Varnell was born and raised in Chattanooga by two parents who served the community their entire working careers. Her father served as a Chattanooga police officer for years, moving up through the ranks and finally earning the title of police chief. Her mother worked with the Chamber of Commerce her entire career. This family has a history of service in the community. They were born here, live here and work here.
Ms. Varnell, like her parents, has indicated she wants to serve her community. What better choice could there be as our next county attorney? She is a very smart, young woman who is energetic and understands the dynamics of her community. Chattanooga would be fortunate to have someone of her caliber serving as the county attorney.
I am glad County Mayor Wamp is using “Best Practices” methodology by beginning a transition period for this very important position in the county government. It is the responsible action to take.
