On February 9, Erlanger Urology, a regional leader for prostate cancer and kidney-sparing surgeries, performed the 50th Robotic Focal High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) procedure. Dr. Amar Singh, Urological Oncologist, performed the milestone procedure.
Erlanger Urology has the first and only two doctors in the state of Tennessee who perform these groundbreaking procedures for the focal treatment of prostate cancer (also known as the “male lumpectomy”). Additionally, they outpaced the expected cases in the first seven months, helping twice as many patients as they expected to care for in the first year.
This represents a significant achievement in the comprehensive care and treatment Erlanger Urology provides men who are living with prostate cancer.
“We are excited about the implications of this milestone for men living with prostate cancer,” said Dr. Singh. “By outpacing our original estimated numbers, we are finding that more patients qualify and ultimately benefit from utilizing the HIFU procedure, ultimately leading to a better quality of life.”
The first robotic focal HIFU procedure in the state was completed by Dr. Singh at Erlanger on May 16, 2023. Then, on August 17, Dr. Benjamin Waldorf became the second physician in Tennessee to perform the procedure, with Erlanger still being the only hospital in the state to offer robotic focal HIFU.
Erlanger President and CEO Jim Coleman stated, “To be able to invest in the most advanced options for the treatment of prostate cancer for our patients highlights our commitment to providing the right care comprehensively and close to home. We are committed to meeting our patients’ needs and continuing to advance the quality of care we provide at Erlanger.”
