UTC Softball Wins 10-2 At Lipscomb

  • Wednesday, April 17, 2024

Chattanooga scored quick and often to come away with a 10-2 five inning victory at Lipscomb Wednesday evening. Chattanooga improves to 29-11 overall. Lipscomb falls to 15-28 on the year.

It didn’t take long for Chattanooga to take command of the game. Kailey Snell led off with a first pitch single. Camryn Cernuto reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. She took off as the ball came off Olivia Lipari’s bat and slid safe into home under the throw on the single up the middle.

Lipari, who took third on the throw home, took third on a passed ball.

Baileigh Pitts hit to short stop was fumbled allowing Lipari to put the Mocs up 2-0. Forsythe was hit by the pitch, putting runners on first and second. With two outs, Addy Keylon belted a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left center to make it a 5-0 advantage for the Mocs.

Lipscomb put up a run in the bottom of the inning to spoil a possible shutout, but the Mocs responded with two more runs in the second. Seller’s started the inning with her 11th hit by pitch but was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice. Cernuto hit a hard single to the shortstop and Lipari singled to left center to load the bases.

Pitts, on a 3-2 count, stood in for the fourth ball and walked in a run to make it 6-1. Forsythe hit a sac fly to right field sending Cernuto home for her second run of the game and Chattanooga led 7-1 after two.

Kaili Phillips ended the second inning at the plate. A thrown down and run down getting the runner out at second ended the inning, bringing Phillips back up to lead off the third and she took advantage of the fresh count. On a 1-1 count, Phillips put the ball over the fence in a left center and UTC was up 8-1.

With Snell at second and Keylon waiting at third, Cernuto cleared the bases with her third triple of the season. That would prove to be enough for the Mocs who gave up a run in the fourth but led 10-2.

The Bison got one runner on in the fifth, but couldn’t get her around to end the game on a fly out to right field.

Chattanooga was 9-for-23 with two home runs and a triple in the game. Cernuto was 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, scored twice and recorded two stolen bases. Lipari was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Addy Keylon was 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBI. Baileigh Pitts drove in two runs without getting a hit.

Riley Lamb picked up her third win of the season, pitching four innings and giving up two runs on four hits.

The Mocs return home for a clash with Mercer over the weekend. The Mocs hold a one-game lead over the Bears in the SoCon standings. The Saturday doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday’s game is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
