Chattanooga Softball Falls 3-2 To Florida State In Tallahassee Regional

  • Friday, May 17, 2024
Chattanooga got on the board first but couldn’t hold off a Florida State late inning rally, falling 3-2 to the 15-seed Seminoles on their home field Friday in Tallahassee.

After getting off to a late start due to the Auburn-UCF game running long, it took four innings before either team got on the board.

With one out in the top of the inning, Kaili Phillips singled to right field and Addy Keylon drew a walk to put two on. Acelynn Sellers stepped up with two outs and launched a hit into left center to the wall on a 2-2 count, driving in two runs to put the Mocs up 2-0.

Florida State picked up one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the lead.
The fifth started off with a ground out, but a triple to left center put their first runner in scoring position. Peja Goold struck out the next batter, but the Seminoles cut the Mocs lead in half with a single up the middle to make it 2-1.

With one out, a walk and single put two runners on the FSU. A fac fly to right tied the game and a triple to right center sent home the eventual game winner.

Chattanooga stranded six runners. The Mocs first three runners reached on walks. Camryn Cernuto doubled in the third inning but was stranded on third base.

Cernuto, Phillips and Sellers each had a hit for the Mocs and Sellers led the way with two RBI. Chattanooga drew five walks and struck out five times.

Goold went all six innings and struck out four and issuing just two free passes.

The Mocs move to 42-15 on the year and FSU adds on another win at 44-14.

Chattanooga returns to the diamond Saturday afternoon in the consolation bracket against Auburn. The Tigers fell 11-6 to UCF in the first game. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. and is the second game of the day. A win for the Mocs puts them in the game immediately following.
