The Chattanooga Steam professional softball team played its second game in the Coca-Cola Scenic City Pro Cup on Thursday morning, falling to the New York Rise, 8-4 at Frost Stadium.
After a scoreless top of the first by Shelby Walters, the Steam started the scoring off in the bottom of the first, scoring two on an error by the Rise left fielder.
In the top of the second, Rise threatened, but ultimately ended the inning when left fielder Logoleo threw out Blampied at home.
Despite two singles for the Rise in the top of the second, Walters worked out of the jam with a strike out and ground out. Nothing for the Steam in the bottom of the third.
Rise responded in the top of the 4th with three runs off a solo shot by Malkin and a two run homerun from Trierweiler. Yanez then came on to relieve Walters and recorded the final out of the inning. Despite a one out single by Kaylee Tow, the Steam could not push one across.
In the top of the fifth, Hannah Gammill was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, which was followed with a walk off Nicole Mendes. With two on and no outs, Malkin hit a line drive to left field to score Gammill. Sydney McCray would come up to lay down a bunt, which was mishandled and allowed Mendes to score. With the top of the lineup up, an error on a Jenna Laird bunt resulted in a run across and two runners in scoring position. Trierweiler scored Mccray on an infield single during the next play. With no outs, Alex Honnold grounded into a double play - leaving a runner on third with two outs. Yanez got Smith to line out to shortstop Maxwell to end the inning. Two base hits in the bottom of the fifth by Maxwell and Webster resulted in a pitching change for the rise, bringing in Sarah Cornell for Mariah Lopez who got a strikeout to end the inning.
The Steam loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but remained at two runs.
The Rise added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh on a Honnold RBI double. A two-run homer from Haley Busby cut into the Rise lead, but ultimately the Rise pulled out the 8-4 win.
The Steam will continue its schedule with a Friday night matchup against the Oklahoma City Spark. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Frost Stadium.
