On June 20, 2024, Douglas Clayton Kirby, 93, of Hixson left his earthly home behind to meet his maker and reunite with his loved ones in heaven.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, George Robert Kirby and Minnie Mai Glenn Kirby, wife, Mary Nelle Webb Kirby, sister, Robbie Alberta Kirby Trainor, and brothers, James Edward Kirby, Sr. and Ralph Jennings Kirby. He is survived by his sister, Glynda Joyce Kirby {Wallace) Stevens. He also leaves behind several generations of nieces and nephews.

He born on April 20, 1931 and grew up on a small farm in rural Warren County, Tn. He joined the Army in 1951 and was stationed in Korea during most of his time in the service. Upon returning to civilian life, he worked at Signal Apparel Inc. for 34 years maintaining complex knitting machines followed by eight years at the Chattanooga Corporation where he was involved in the assembly of specialized medical equipment. He was a devout member of the Manchester Park Church of Christ.

Douglas enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing board games, gardening and listening to records and cassette tapes. In recent years he spent time puttering in the yard and sitting in his garage with the door open watching the goings on in his neighborhood.

A Celebration of Douglas’ life will be held in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Monday, June 24, at 12 p.m. with Pastor Johnny Owens officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. He will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife, Nelle in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Manchester Park Church of Christ, P.O. Box 11309, Chattanooga, Tn. 37401.

Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
