I have become increasingly disgusted with American life in this era of disrespect, dishonesty, and the "me first" attitudes that far too many Americans embody. However, I experienced an incident yesterday that led me to believe that, despite the downward spiral of this country spiritually, morally and ethically, there are still some decent Americans who will help others.
I had stopped at the Wal-mart Neighborhood Market on Hixson Pike to put fuel in my car.
A minute or so after I started to fill the car, two ladies entered the parking lot apparently to buy fuel and unfortunately their mini-van stopped in the entrance to the parking lot. Predictably, the driver following them blew his horn and drove past them quickly. Others also blew their horns but did not offer to help. However, one young man promptly stopped and jumped out to help the ladies who were trying to push the van up a slight grade out of the entrance. Another man quickly jumped behind the van to help. As I stopped filling my car and ran over to help, another man came to offer his help. Together we pushed the van out of the way and allowed it to coast to the fuel pumps. The ladies were very appreciative.
There were at least four people who were willing to be "good Samaritans." This seemingly trivial incident stands in stark contrast to the all-foo-frequent disrespect and low-class behavior that fills headlines and newscasts today, particularly during their coverage of political activity.
