Chattanooga Mocs senior defender Reuben Lowery III is taking on additional responsibilities. He’s no longer serving as a leader as a team captain in the Scenic City. His talents and abilities are needed nationally.
Lowery was named to the prestigious NCAA Football Oversight Committee/Student-Athlete Connection Group.
"It's an awesome opportunity," Lowery opened. "It's always good to represent who you are and have a team that buys into who you are as a person, who you are as a leader, to go represent them not only the, but the entirety of the FCS. It's Unique. It's different than FBS.
"So, it's a really fun opportunity."
His term of service on the committee begins this year and continues through June 30, 2025. He's one of 12 nationwide in all three NCAA divisions to earn the coveted spots. His former teammate McClendon Curtis ’22 also served on the committee in 2021-22 and again in 2022-23.
"Just knowing McClendon as a person and the type of guy he is and type of leader he is, to know that he had that experience, I know he excelled in it and talked very highly of it. To have opportunity to do the same thing and be in that position, to have someone to look up to who's been there, it's really cool."
As mentioned, Lowery served as team captain in 2023. He played nearly every game since arriving on campus in the fall 2020. His is an interesting tale making an immediate impact before actually getting the normal influences to getting to that point.
He arrived during the COVID delay with the Mocs playing once that fall and four times in the spring. That led to a regular role in 2021 season. The situation led to his first spring practice coming almost two years after he arrived. The best development time for young players.
Lowery excelled as a first-time starter in 2022 which led to his captaincy last season. He’s certainly a go-to guy as FCA president.
"It's a big deal," Coach Rusty Wright explained. That's a huge committee for the NCAA in college football. I was on it (as a coach), so I understand how important it is, and the things that are discussed in there.
"It's really important from the student-athlete perspective for them to have a voice. It's a voice that is heard a lot, and Reuben will be a great ambassador for our game."
He’s also an academic all-star. Literally. He made the FCS Academic All-Star team in 2023 and also owns CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District squad. Lowery graduated in the spring with a degree in Mechanical Engineering as a Latin Honors Candidate.
