Let Down the Next by Carylon Cooper, oil, 60x48 interior
Shuptrine's Gallery, located on Broad Street and part of the Southside Art and Design District, announces the addition of renowned artist, Carylon Cooper to their slate of permanent Gallery Artists.
Shuptrine says that incorporating Ms. Cooper into this select grouping is exciting, especially due to her influence on Chattanooga’s local art scene.
A resident of Chattanooga, Ms. Cooper has amassed a national following over the past 30 years. Categorized as a Colorist by some, her pieces are created on large canvases and reflect subject matter that ranges from boats and water, to still lives to animals. She refers to her chosen subjects as “icons” and each holds a special meaning for the artist. She chooses to keep her large compositions simple, often including written verbiage on the canvas to accompany the image. Her desire is to make art that is “pure, simple, honest and unadorned”. She wants her art to be seen as an extension of her faith in a creative God and to call attention to His goodness.
In an interview with Ballard Designs, Ms. Cooper said, “I think there’s a part of me that will always apply paint to the canvas in the only way I know how to, but I’m constantly learning and watching and taking in other work. I’m totally inspired by other people’s art and what they’re doing, so hopefully those influences are being compressed down into my work.”
Shuptrine’s Gallery is hosting an open house on Thursday, Aug. 15, 12-7 p.m., at 2613 Broad St. and the public is invited.
