Flames Score Twice In The Second Half To Earn First Win

  • Saturday, September 14, 2024
Two second half goals propelled the Lee University men’s soccer team past Cedarville University to give the Flames their first win of the season. Ryan Chouyouti and Marlon Grossman provided the goals for Lee while Jakob Buhrkuhl made five saves to help preserve the shutout.

Cedarville had a shot that was blocked right out of the gate just 30 seconds into the contest. After that, both teams settled in and it became a defensive struggle. Neither team managed to take a shot until the ten-minute mark.
Lee then rattled off a couple of shots but nothing found the mark.

Lee brought the pressure in the first half with eight total shots but couldn’t manage to break through. It was the second half when the Flames found the back of the net. In the 58th minute, Marlon Grossman slotted a pass across the front of the box and found Ryan Chouyouti who slotted it home. It was the first goal of the season for Chouyouti.

Within in the next 90 seconds, Lee doubled their lead. This time it was Grossman who scored. He took a pass from Nick Lu and scored his first goal for the Flames. Lee had one more opportunity to score in the 68thminute, but Marc Ehmann’s penalty kick was saved. Over the last 20 minutes the Flames turned away several opportunities from the Yellow Jackets to earn the shoutout win.

In a physical game, Lee had four yellow cards and 19 fouls, while Cedarville had two yellow cards and 14 fouls. Chouyouti and Grossman had three shots each while the Flames took a total of 13 shots.

The will return to action on Friday, September 20 at 7:30 PM as they will open Gulf South Conference action. The Flames will take on the University of West Alabama at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

Coach Potteiger’s Thoughts:

“We needed the result today. I felt like our first game against North Greenville we deserved the win but that is soccer and took one on the chin. Today’s game carried a little more weight  and we wanted it and knew we needed to have it. We handled so much in the 18 yard area so well today.”

“Next week we jump into GSC play. We know what it is. You better come ready to play and ready to compete, battle and take your moments.
