Ozella Griggs Hellerstedt
On Saturday, September 14, 2024, Ozella Griggs Hellerstedt was welcomed by her Lord and Savior in to His Kingdom of Heaven.
She was born on June 28, 1932 in McCaysville, Ga., to Oscar and Alice Griggs. She was the youngest of nine children. Ozella married the love of her life, Robert Paris Hellerstedt Sr, on July 10, 1954. Ozella spent her early years cruising the streets of Copper Hill, Tn., with her sisters and nieces and playing basketball in high school. She led a life of compassion and servitude, starting by caring for her bedridden mother. Always loving and protective, she raised her two boys, the pride and joy of her life, Bobby and Evan on Lookout Mountain.
Later in life she continued to show compassion for others by caring for her father in his last years. She also spent her free time sewing and volunteering at Erlanger Hospital. Ozella was always in the background, never enjoying the spotlight and preferred to be at home. She spent her later years loving for and keeping her grandchildren, who loved and adored her. She enjoyed the simple things and loved watching birds, looking at fall leaves, and planting flowers. She could often be found watching the Golden Girls with popcorn or candy or enjoying her favorite, Chick-fil-a.
Ozella was a true steward and servant of Christ. She instilled her faith in her children and family through her actions and love.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Hellerstedt, her parents and all of her siblings. She longed for the day to be with them again.
She is survived by her sons, Bobby Hellerstedt (Renee), Evan Hellerstedt (Tresa), her grandson, Evan Hellerstedt Jr, her granddaughters, Laura Beth Hellerstedt, Lexy Chapin (Ricky), and Bonnie Hellerstedt, as well as several nieces and nephews. Her family was everything to her as well as her loving friends: Megan, Wendy, Debra, Ronda, and Lori.
A Celebration of Ozella’s Life will be held graveside in the Forest Hills Cemetery on Friday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be Thursday evening beginning at 4 p.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
