Defending state champion Baylor hosted Briarcrest in a non-region soccer match Saturday and won 5-3. With the match knotted at 1-1 at halftime, Emily Betterton led a strong second half for the Lady red Raiders. Betterton notched two goals to go with scores by Reese Rowlett and Elizabeth Silva.
At the 6th minute, Baylor’s Olivia Newton scored off a Lilly Catalanotto corner, then at the 17th minute Ali Howard of Briarcrest tied it up with a score off a breakaway.
The second half started off with a Baylor goal at the 44th minute when Betterton scored off a pass from Charlotte Hoss. Then at the 51st minute, Rowlett hit the back of the net off a volley.
Briarcrest scored off a set piece at the 57th minute, followed by Betterton’s second score of the half at the 61st minute, Emily Betterton scored off a Silva free kick.
Silva followed that up with her own goal at the 72nd minute.
The Lady Saints ended the scoring with a goal at the 78th minute off a corner kick.
According to Baylor head coach Curtis Blair, “I thought we did a great job of winning 50/50 soccer balls today. We had a lot of different players' score today and that is always good.”
Baylor is now 10-1-2 on the season.
