Covenant Men Lose 103-74 To Visiting Huntingdon

  • Tuesday, January 14, 2025

For the first of two conference home games this week, Covenant took on Huntingdon, who came into Tuesday night with a 12-2 record. The Hawks showed their skills, as a quick start turned out to be too much for the Scots to reckon with winning 103-74.

Covenant missed its first eight shots of the night, but Huntingdon started on fire, opening out a 17-0 lead in under five minutes.  Kaleb Lofton buried a triple for Covenant's first points of the game to end the scoring drought. After the Scots made three free throws across a couple of possessions and an inside basket by Lofton they were within 12 points with 10:42 remaining. Huntingdon responded with a 7-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer to go up 28-9.

The Hawks continued to get in transition as a 6-0 run, all on the fast break put them ahead 37-14.
Later in the half, Fisher Mitchell scored four in a row for the Scots to cut the lead to 45-22. A transition dunk ended a 6-0 run to end the half for Huntingdon as it went into the locker room with a 51-22 lead.

After the Hawks scored the first four points of the half, an old-fashioned 3-point play by Colt Donley put the Scots on the board. Covenant started to keep up with Huntingdon going point-for-point as Logan Patterson made a 3-ball to put the score at 64-33. A couple of inside baskets by the Hawks pushed their lead to 70-35 with 12:45 remaining.  The lead remained around 30 points as a Pierce Smith inside bucket followed by a triple from Zach Wescher put the score at 76-48. Smith started to get aggressive inside, scoring a quick six points as his team still trailed 84-58.

Huntingdon's final scoring run of the night was a 7-0 run as it led 91-60.  The Hawks reached the century mark with 1:22 left in the game on a layup off a missed free throw.

Covenant moves to 19-13 all-time against Huntingdon. Paterson was Covenant's leading scorer with 14 points and three made triples. Smith was right behind him with 13 points and four blocks.  Ray'Quan Taylor for Huntingdon led all scorers with 25 points and 12 rebounds.  Covenant shot 31.3% (26-83) from the field and 22.9% (8-35) shooting 3-pointers while Huntingdon was 58.4% (45-77) and 30% (6-20) in the same categories.  The Scots were outrebounded 56-41.

Covenant hosts Belhaven on Thursday night at 7 p.m. on Max Out Barnes night.
