UTC Battles Hard; Loses 19-16 To Campbell University

  • Sunday, January 19, 2025

It was a see-saw battle with both sides winning five matches Sunday afternoon as the UTC wrestling team hosted Campbell University.  There were four lead changes in the dual with the last coming in the final bout. The difference was one major decision for Chattanooga against two tech falls and a major for Campbell to pull out the 19-16 win.

"I've mentioned it recently that our guys are starting to wrestle for each other more than themselves, and you saw the passion of the crowd for our guys," said head coach Kyle Ruschell.  "We're close. We just need to get the bonus points when we have the opportunity and not give up bonus points when they have opportunities. Every point's going to matter, every position is going to matter in a lot of those matches. There's three matches in there that I think we could have won that we let slip

Dayne Dalrymple's first career ranked win came over No. 31 Wayne Denkins who finished fourth at the Southern Scuffle.

The match went to extra time after an illegal hold on Campbell’s Chris Earnest. Earnest got a key takedown turning 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. The illegal hold, determined on officials review, closed the gap to 5-4 inside the final minute of regulation. Noah Castillo got an escape and then out-wrestled Earnest at the end for the final takedown in sudden victory.

Sergio Desiante extended his winning streak to nine.

Kamdyn Munro’s dominant win at 184 nearly earned six points with Kendrick Hodge saved by the second period buzzer while on his back.

Campbell claimed five bonus points in wins at 125, 197 and 285. The Mocs got one at 184.
