- Thursday, February 13, 2025
Hubert Carey Brown Jr., 86, of Pompano Beach, Florida, peacefully passed away on January 22, 2025. Born on September 18, 1938, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Hubert Carey Brown Sr. and Urania Price Brown.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Carey was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 42 years, Joan Davis Brown, who passed away in 2002. He is survived by his son, Richard Brown; his cherished grandchildren, Joshua, Elise, and Sophia; eight nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Tim, who was a source of constant companionship and support.
Carey’s love for service and leadership began in high school, where he was active in ROTC, setting the foundation for his distinguished military career. He served honorably in the 12th United States Army Corps from 1960 to 1967, later being discharged with the rank of Captain in November 1968.
He began his banking and accounting career at Price Waterhouse, then moving to Commerce Union Bank/Sovran Bank in Nashville, where he headed up their retail banking. Later, he retired as Vice President from First Tennessee Bank in Knoxville as Head of Retail Banking.
Throughout his life, Carey was a man of many passions. He was an avid competitive bridge player, an accomplished gardener with a particular love for growing beautiful rose gardens, and a lifelong lover of the arts, often attending Broadway musicals. Traveling the world with his friends and loved ones, he embraced new cultures and experiences with open arms.
Carey credited much of his success in life to his education at Chattanooga’s City High School and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he laid the foundation for his career in accounting and banking. His professional life, however, was only one facet of his character. Carey's true legacy lies in his deep commitment to family, friends, and his community. In honor of his passion for education, Carey and his late wife, Joan, established the Carey and Joan Brown Scholarship to help deserving students pursue careers in teaching, ensuring future generations have the opportunity to thrive through education.
His family and friends will remember Carey not just for his achievements but for the love, generosity, and dedication he poured into his relationships. Whether through thoughtful letters, phone calls, or visits, Carey took great pride in staying connected with his extended family, keeping the bonds of kinship strong across the years and miles.
A burial service will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, at 1200 Bailey Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404, at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Carey’s memory be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church, a place of great significance to both Carey and Joan. The church, located at 400 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37404, was a special place for them, with Carey’s Welsh grandparents being among its earliest members.
Carey will be deeply missed, but his memory and impact will live on through his family, friends, and all who were touched by his kind spirit and unwavering love.
