Scott Hamilton Visits Cleveland State
Cleveland State Community College Foundation recently hosted An Evening with Scott Hamilton, Olympic Gold medal figure skater. Presented by the Bank of Cleveland/Builtwell Banking, more than 250 community members attended the event and raised over $94,000 for the Foundation which provides support for the college and hundreds of scholarships to students each year.
In 1984, Hamilton captured the attention of the world with his Olympic Gold medal performances in Sarajevo. He has won 70 titles, awards and honors including an Emmy Award nomination and inductions into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. He has been an analyst, commentator, producer, best-selling author, cancer survivor, and founder of the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation (Cancer Alliance for Research, Education and Survivorship).
During the event, the 2025 Community First Award winners were recognized. The awards honor
individuals within the college’s five-county service area who give an extraordinary commitment
of time, talent or treasure to their community. Matthew G. Coleman received the Alumni of the Year, and Dr. Jason Bell received the Educator of the Year. Lisa and Scottie Mayfield received the Don M. Lorton Community Servants of the Year.
The “Evening With” series started in 2022 with Archie Manning. Basketball legend Tamika Catchings was the guest in 2023, and left-hand alone pianist from London, Nicholas McCarthy, was the guest in 2024. The Foundation will host An Evening with Jim “Doc” McCloughan in 2026. A Medal of Honor Recipient, McCloughan was drafted in the United States Army in 1968 and served as a combat medic. Specialist McCloughan has been highly decorated receiving the Combat Medic Badge, two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and more. Tickets will be available for this event in the fall.
