The Scott L. Probasco, Jr., Distinguished Chair of Free Enterprise (Probasco Chair), hosted a one-of-a-kind lunch & learn event last Thursday that blended the worlds of economics and etiquette. Featuring the renowned Nobel Laureate Dr. Vernon L. Smith and his wife, acclaimed etiquette expert Candace Smith, the event combined a hands-on etiquette training over lunch with deep insights on the interplay between ethics, economics and etiquette.
“From classic films like My Fair Lady to modern television series like Bridgerton, pop culture often highlights the role of etiquette in navigating social structures and relationships — a reminder of its timeless relevance,” said Dr.
Claudia Williamson Kramer, UTC’s Probasco chair. “It was a real joy to host UTC students at an event in which they could hone their etiquette chops while also learning about how such skills can be applied to better their own economic well-being.”
Students and select members of Chattanooga’s business community, while enjoying a three-course plated lunch, were treated to a lesson about the role of modern etiquette in upholding dignity and respect in both personal and professional interactions, by Candace Smith. Following that experience, Dr. Vernon L. Smith led the group on an exploration of the profound connection between moral principles, freedom and prosperity, in his talk titled “Propriety, Property and Freedom.”
“Oftentimes, the best learning experiences that take place on campus happen during events like these that tie lessons taught in the classroom to real-world experiences,” said Dr. Kramer. “I am incredibly grateful to the Smiths and our area business leaders for coming together to create such a wonderful learning moment for UTC students. I look forward to creating more of these opportunities in the future.”
