Charles Roland Wells
Retired Police and Fire Chief Charles Roland Wells known as Chuck or THE LEGEND by his fellow officers died peacefully in the arms of his adoring wife, Candace, April 17, 2025.
He was a true American hero, who was renowned for his inner strength, resilience and exceptional bravery despite perilous adversity. He was a valiant warrior, steadfast protector, and selfless leader – who served with unwavering dedication in the United States Navy, the Chattanooga Police Department and as Police Chief and Fire Chief of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
Born with a spirit of service and an unbreakable resolve, he first answered the call to protect his great nation as a proud member of the United States Navy Warfare Special Ops. Through courage and commitment, he stood on the front lines for freedom, embodying honor, loyalty and valor.
Following his military service, his dedication to protect others never waned. Transitioning into Chattanooga law enforcement, he patrolled our streets with integrity, empathy and unwavering lionheartedness. Rising through the ranks with tireless dedication and an unshakable sense of duty, he rose from burglary and robbery detective, patrol sergeant, multiple undercover positions, FBI intelligence to government sponsored initiatives investigating cybercrimes and internet crimes against children.
Chuck Wells, one of strong ethical leadership, left a profound indelible impact on his fellow officers, inspiring the countless lives he touched throughout his career. He was a man of integrity, strength, and compassion. From his earliest days on the beat to his highest position of leadership as the Chief of Police and Fire for Lookout Mountain, Charles Roland Wells embodied the very best of what it means to wear the badge – courage in the face of danger, compassion in moments of crisis and wisdom in guiding others.
Chuck had a deep appreciation for military history. He spent countless hours exploring old battlefields, forgotten trails chasing hidden artifacts with his metal detector. He loved fishing with Candace, Robert, Mit and their friends. As a passionate scuba diver, dedicated instructor, and skilled rescue professional he patiently guided people through the wonders of the underwater world with unmatched enthusiasm and care.
His faith in his Lord Jesus Christ was a cornerstone of his character and a light to all who knew him. Whether in moments of joy or seasons of challenge, Chuck leaned on the promises of Scripture and radiated a peace that could only come from knowing Christ intimately. He was a faithful servant, always quick to offer a prayer, a word of encouragement, or a helping hand. To know Chuck was to witness the love of Jesus in action.
