Phyllis Irene Maxine McClure was born on August 26, 1939, in Old Washington, Tn.

Her parents were John Matthew McClure Sr. and Cornia Lee Thurman McClure. Phyllis is survived by her sister, Jane McClure Arthur, son and daughter in-law George Wilcox and Lauren Levi of Austin, Tx., many other extended family members, longtime friend Dean Walker, and many friends.

Phyllis passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, after spending a few days with family and friends and trying to recover from a sudden illness.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cornia McClure, sisters Layton McClure Porter, Josephine McClure Morgan. Thelma McClure Housley and brother John McClure Jr. and by her husband, M. Ray Payne.

Phyllis attended Spring City High School, and transferred to Hixson High School, graduating in 1957. Phyllis spent the majority of her adult life in Hixson; moving to Dayton with husband M. Ray Payne in 2005. Phyllis worked at Morgan Furniture store, and retired from there in 2016. Phyllis continued to live in Dayton, enjoying life and sharing love with family, friends, neighbors and her church community.

Phyllis was a member of Dayton First Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held at Coulter Garrison Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 17, from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Dayton First Baptist Church on Wednesday, June 18, at 2 p.m,, with interment to follow at Smith Wilkey Cemetery.

Simple flower arrangements, or a donation to the American Stroke Association in her memory will be appreciated.
