High school students throughout Hamilton County Schools now have even more reason to roll up their sleeves and save lives, thanks to a generous contribution from a prominent local law firm. Summers, Rufolo & Rodgers has made a major gift to Blood Assurance, the region’s nonprofit
blood center and primary provider of blood and blood products to hospitals throughout the greater Chattanooga area.
The funding will support a district-wide challenge aimed at increasing blood donations among high school students during the 2025–2026 school year. A total of $75,000 will be awarded to schools that collect the most donations, with the money supporting student-focused programs and initiatives.
“This incredible gift is about empowering students to step up as leaders and lifesavers,” said Garry Allison, Senior Vice President of Operations for Blood Assurance. “Every pint of blood collected at these school drives stays right here in our community, supporting patients in local hospitals. This gift will help ensure the next generation understands just how vital blood donation is.”
A Dual Purpose: Support and Preparedness
The donation has two primary goals: supporting schools and inspiring more people to donate blood, especially in the face of potential disasters.
“Many people are hesitant to donate, and we hope this initiative will give them that extra
encouragement to step up,” said attorney Jeff Rufolo. “We’ve all seen how quickly a disaster can
strike. When emergencies hit, having a healthy and reliable blood supply can make the difference
between life and death. We’re proud to support our schools and help build a stronger, safer
community.”
Friendly Competition Across All High Schools
All Hamilton County Schools high schools will be grouped into three divisions—small, medium, and large—based on student enrollment. Schools will compete within their divisions to earn awards based on the number of blood donations collected through December 31. Faculty, parents, and school supporters are also encouraged to donate to help their preferred school earn credit. The award structure includes:
Small Schools Division:
1st Place – $10,000
2nd Place – $5,000
Medium Schools Division:
1st Place – $15,000
2nd Place – $5,000
Large Schools Division:
1st Place – $30,000
2nd Place – $10,000
As a thank-you, donors at the schools will receive a special commemorative t-shirt, custom-designed to reflect their commitment to saving lives.
How the Competition Will Work
The competition will run through December 31. Blood Assurance will track donations by school and update an online scoreboard after each drive. Drives will count credit for whole blood, double red cells, platelets, and plasma, recognizing students who give in all forms.
