Erica Chappell rolled home her fifth birdie on her day at No. 18 to grab a one-shot lead heading into Wednesday’s final round of the Tennessee Women’s Senior Amateur being played at Johnson City Country Club.

The Nashville resident shot 5-over-par 77 on her round, posting a tidy 35 over her final nine holes after covering the front nine in 42. Chappell struggled out of the gate with a trio of early double bogeys to put her at 7-over after five holes. But she handled the soggy conditions expertly from that point in covering her final 13 holes in 2-under-par.

Chappell is hoping to add to her previous Tennessee Golf Association title earned in the 2022 Women’s Senior Four-Ball, and she has a narrow margin over a bevy of esteemed challengers.

Defending champion Susan Miller of London heads a pack of five golfers tied for 2nd at 6-over 78. Others in that group are 2022 champion Rhonda Switzer-Nadasdi of Nashville, Carol Fuller of Mt. Carmel, Helen Holland of Nashville and Jayna Jones of Maryville.

Robin Banner of Knoxville and Julie Carlton of Hermitage are tied for 7th at 8-over 80, three shots behind Chappell.

Sauter Paces Super Seniors

Janice Sauter of Franklin holds a three-stroke advantage in the Women’s Super Senior division after opening with a round of 10-over 82.

Two-time defending champion Gena Ridings of Franklin is joined by Nashville’s Mary Ruth Gentle in 2nd at 13-over 85. Brentwood’s Sandy Foster is alone in 4th at 14-over 86, while Linda Post of Brentwood holds down the 5th spot at 18-over 90.

Woodward Mid-Amateur Leader

Allison Woodward of Erwin holds the first-round lead in the Women’s Mid-Amateur competition at 7-over 79, holding a four-shot advantage over Teleri Hughes of Knoxville who posted 11-over 83.

Wednesday’s final round will feature a shotgun start among all divisions beginning at 9:30 a.m.
