Private First Class Travis Frederick Haslip, 20, of Ooltewah, Tn. was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq on May 19, 2007. PFC Haslip was the first Hamilton County resident killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
A native of Pontiac, Mi., Travis had been a resident of Ooltewah since 1990. He attended Ooltewah High School, Collegedale Academy and Chattanooga State. He attended Ooltewah Seventh Day Adventist Church. He had been in the U.S. Army since December, 2005 and was awarded the Star Medal and a Purple Heart.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Frank Haslip.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Lana and Denis McDonald, Ooltewah; father and companion, Fred Haslip and Joy White, Clarkston, Mi.; sister, Rachel Howard, Ooltewah; two nieces, Rene and Stephanie Howard, Ooltewah; grandmothers, Lucille Furman, Zephyrhills, Fl., and Frances Haslip, Clarkston, Mi.; grandfather, Clere (Carol) Braman, Co.; great-grandfather, Shirley (Jessie) Van Deusen, Zephyrhills, Fl.; step-grandparents, Danny and Carol McDonald, Collegedale; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Jerry Arnold and Pastor Jose Nieves officiating. Burial will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.
