Chattanooga State Technical Community College has received a new, state-of-the-art Trimble R6 Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver from Precision Products LLC to be used by surveying students in the construction and civil engineering technology associate of applied science degree programs.

Precision Products LLC is a Louisville, Ky. based company, with an office located in Chattanooga, that specializes in comprehensive solutions to businesses needing to perform accurate work with precision tools and systems such as construction lasers, construction machine control systems, survey instruments, GPS and related software.

The equipment has been provided at no cost to the college for student use during the fall and spring semesters.

“This collaboration is another effort by the college to further integrate with the various support agencies within the construction industry to better prepare our students for a successful construction career,” said Tim McGhee, director of the Building & Construction Institute of the Southeast at Chattanooga State.

The equipment was delivered by Len Snow, Precision Products LLC survey sales specialist, and Wiley Heard, sales director of the local Precision Products LLC office. Mr. Snow also provided the initial training on the new equipment and Mr. Heard will be available to provide any future technical assistance, if needed.

Earlier this summer, Precision Products LLC installed a Trimble NetR5™ GPS Reference Station on the Chattanooga State campus that will provide the satellite signal information needed to operate the new surveying equipment. The Reference Station and satellite signal information accessibility has also been provided to the college at no cost by Precision Products LLC.

Chattanooga State surveying students will be able to use the new Trimble GPS technology which includes access to the Global Navigation Satellite System. The engineering technology department head, Bob Dreyer, stated, “We welcome Precision Products LLC as a new partner to Chattanooga State and thank them for their generous support to our surveying students.”

According to Duane Nickols, Chattanooga State Surveying and Construction and Civil Engineering Technology instructor, “This new (Trimble) equipment will allow our students to learn more about the latest technology that’s evolving in the market today and to gain vital hands on experience that will enable them to conduct accurate surveying operations in the future.”
