African American Museum Has Reception For New Jazz Exhibit

  • Wednesday, October 22, 2008

The Chattanooga African American Museum will host an opening reception Thursday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. for the museum’s newest jazz exhibits.

Playing the Changes is a collection of photographs taken by the legendary jazz bassist Milton Hinton. Hinton began this collection in 1936, when he first went on the road with Cab Calloway. Hinton took photos of his musician friends and colleagues including Billie Holliday and Duke Ellington at work and at play from New York City to Tokyo, in bars, bus stations, and recording studios. Playing the Changes is a major retrospective of Hinton’s work.

The second jazz exhibit on display at the museum is Jazz Greats: The Work of Jerry Allen. Jerry Allen, an acclaimed artist who hails from the Chattanooga area, skillfully captures the motion, intensity, and passion of jazz’s legendary artists by using charcoal.

During the opening reception, guests will have an opportunity to tour the new exhibits and enjoy the musical talents of Frank Bumpass. The event is free and open to the public. However, an RSVP is required by Oct. 31. To RSVP, please call (423) 266-8658 or email joycecaam@bellsouth.net.

Playing Changes and Jazz Greats will be on display at the Chattanooga African American Museum from Nov. 7 through Jan. 9, 2009. Visitors can tour these exhibits as well as others Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. or on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.

General admission is $5, $3 for senior citizens and students and $2 for children ages 6-12. Members and children 5 and under are free.

To learn about membership opportunities or to obtain additional information about these and other exhibits, please call (423) 266-8658 or visit www.caamhistory.org
