Tradition that will be celebrated on Lee University's campus during homecoming weekend will include the anniversaries of several service clubs and organizations. On that list will be Epsilon Lambda Phi, a women's Greek service club celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Epsilon Lambda Phi began in 1988 on Lee Day by 10 charter members: Ianthia Ballington, Damaris Betancourt, Judy Clary, Cindy Homan, Julie Hyden, Chris Mathes, Stephanie May, Lisa Mulkey, Valerie Parker, and Lisa Roberts. The charter sponsors were Anita Blevins, Dani Smith, and Alisa White. Epsilon's first Beau was Gladwin Harper.
The club was formed when a, "group of young women wanted to create a community focused on becoming one in Christ and coming together to serve the community," said Epsilon Vice President Natalie Richter.
In 20 years, club officers and members alike believe that Epsilon has reached notable goals. "We are celebrating 20 years, and that alone makes a statement, but for me, my perception is that I have watched these girls, my sisters, grow together and grasp our motto, 'striving to become one in Christ,' in service to one another and our community," said club member Danielle Bryan.
This focus on service has been a theme for the group since the beginning. "In order for us to grow together as a body, we have to serve the community and see past ourselves," said Cara Bain, Epsilon alumna and current club sponsor. "Our motto calls us not just to love Epsilon but to reach out to others. If we're trying to become one in Christ, we have to serve."
Service is a requirement for all members. New members each semester must initiate a service project and invite past members to participate. In spring 2007, the club embarked on its largest effort, raising $7,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by running the Country Music Marathon. They have also participated in feeding ministries and Lee's Crossover ministry, among others.
One of Epsilon's senior members, Chelsea Hickey, stated, "I feel honored to be a part of something greater than myself and to know that my club has such a strong history that I have helped to create."
The club will hold a 20th anniversary banquet on Friday evening for all alumni. The banquet will feature several alumni speakers, a video of the club's history and a time for alumni and current members to come together in fellowship. The banquet will take place at the Five Points Museum Center.
