Southern gospel tenor Jerry Trammell will bring his distinct sound to Sacred Sounds Fridays at the Ringgold Depot at Depot Street and U.S. 41 in Ringgold, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a special concert for the Share America Foundation, Inc.

Soloists Bill Stobaugh, Shelia and Lindzy Reed will also appear. Randall Franks, “Officer Randy Goode” from TV’s “In the Heat of the Night” will emcee. Ticket donation is $5.

Mr. Trammell’s voice set the standard for many tenors that followed during his five-year run as one of the stars of “The Gospel Singing Jubilee” as one of the Florida Boys. “Scars in the Hands of Jesus,” “Standing of the Solid Rock” “When I Stand in the Presence of the Lord” are three of the songs his talents helped popularize.

Being part of one of the best-known music shows in history early in his career afforded him wide exposure for his talents, but he said there was always something going on behind the scenes to bring laughter to the set with so many talented young artists and guests performing on the show.

“We were getting ready to sing a very serious song and every one was wanting to play around,” he said. “It was our third and final day of taping. Everybody was wore out and we were getting ready to do ‘Scars in the Hand of Jesus.’”

He said Florida Boys leader Les Beasley had told everyone to be “real quiet.” Dixie Echoes leader Dale Shelnut couldn’t let the serious moment go unbroken, he said.

“He took a big roll of duct tape and rolled it in front of us between us and grand stands where audience was. He said loudly ‘tape rolling.’ We snapped to like we were getting ready to sing and here was the tape rolling across the floor. The crowd just went nuts.”

He traveled with other mainstays such as The Blackwood Brothers (1983-88), J.D. Sumner and the Stamps (1988-1991), and The Blue Ridge Quartet, among others.

He has shared his solo ministry around the country for the last six years including his large catalog of music and his interesting testimony including his experiences overcoming alcohol addiction.

“My testimony any more means more to me than the music,” he said. He said his purpose is simply leading people to Jesus. “The music opens the door for me to be able to do that so it goes hand and glove,” he said.
