John Gilbert
John Stuart Gilbert, 76, died after a long battle with bone cancer on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born in McDonald, Tn., on June 4, 1933, to Rev. J. Floyd and Ethel Gilbert. He was a graduate of Central High School class of 1951 and worked for Ahlstrom Filtration for 46 years as a sales representative.
John was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and a member of the Genesis Class. He was a former member of Hixson United Methodist Church for 30 years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. J. Floyd and Ethel Gilbert and father-in-law, Harry M. Sherrill.
John was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War. He was a very active member of the Hixson Kiwanis Club between 1970 and 1980 and he served as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital for many years.
John was an avid golfer and a member of Windstone Golf Club and former member of Creeks Bend Golf Club.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Pat (Sherrill) Gilbert, two sons, Tim (Terri) Gilbert, Wes (Dana) Gilbert, four grandchildren, Bailey, Delaney, Lindsay and Weston; brother, Rev. Robert (Dot) Gilbert; sister-in-law, Pam (Randy) Rowan; brother-in-law Marion (Doris) Sherrill; mother-in-law, Josephine Sherrill and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice of Chattanooga and the Hospice doctors and staff of Memorial Hospital for their loving care of John. Special thanks to nurse Toby Hall and a special friend, Dick Gray, who will be delivering the eulogy for the service.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. at Ridgedale Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Owens officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Dick Gray, Rod Adams, Louis Priddy, Sam Willmore, Frank Coulter Jr., Marion Sherrill, Ron Shoemake and Bud Rohen. Honorary pallbearers will be the Genesis Class of Ridgedale Baptist Church, The Upper Room of Hixson United Methodist Church, Charles Dammann, Dr. John Bacon and Randy Rowan.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 4-8 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home East Brainerd Chapel.
