Ita Maria Fitzpatrick Thompson, 69, of Chattanooga, died on Tuesday, March 30 of 2010. She was surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Ballinsole, Galway, Ireland, to the late Patrick Fitzpatrick and Bridgette Walsh Fitzpatrick. After graduating high school she moved to the states to attend college and study teaching.

She moved back to Ireland and later moved to Italy where she met her husband, Fred Thompson, an American sailor and followed him back to the states where they married and had three children.

She became a naturalized citizen and began teaching at O.L.P.H school for 15 years and then UTC children’s Center for 21 years, where she retired.

Once retired, she engaged in many volunteering services, hobbies and other interests. Included in this was her service at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. She will always be remembered as the story teller for Thomas the Tank and The North Pole Limited, which she loved.

She was a very active member at St. Stephens Catholic Church. She was a loving and caring woman and touched the lives of so many. She will be sadly missed by all that she has met.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Fred "Tiny" Thompson; siblings, Nuala VanderPlas of Holland, Patsy Deegan of Ireland, Veronica North of England, and Michael Fitzpatrick of Ireland; children, all of Chattanooga, Cindy Witt (Mark), Mitzi Sanders (Rick Eden), Michael Thompson (Amy); grandchildren, Christopher Witt, Whitney Sanders, Amber Thompson and Mitchell Sanders.

The family will receive friends Sunday, April 4, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Easter Sunday and again from 8-9 a.m. on Monday morning at St. Stephens Catholic Church.

The Rev. Gilbert Diaz will celebrate the mass at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery at 11 a.m. A reception following burial will be at St. Stephens Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephens Catholic Church on Lee Hwy. which will continue enriching programs she was so lovingly involved.
