Don Mack “Whitey” Matthews, 89, of Lookout Valley, passed away on August 30, 2025.

Born on Dec. 15, 1935, in Bridgeport, Al., to the late John and Stella Matthews, Don was a proud graduate of Bridgeport High School. After graduation, he began a long career with CSX Railroad, where he dedicated 47 years of service—remarkably, without ever riding a train.

A devoted member of Wauhatchie Methodist Church, Don’s faith and commitment were central to his life and character.

Don was an avid golfer and a diehard Alabama football fan. He treasured time spent with his family and friends and was known as “the life of the party,” never meeting a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings: Geneva, Doshie, Bayne, Edna, Tony, Louise, Luke, and Rubye.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 37 years, Cathy; his children, Jeff Matthews and Donna Mullins (Jeff), both of Chattanooga; his sister, Nanna Whitcher (Warren) of Bridgeport, AL; as well as many dear friends and golf buddies.

A memorial service celebrating Don’s larger-than-life spirit will be held at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept 4, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wauhatchie Methodist Church and/or Hearth Hospice.

Don’s kindness, devotion, and love of golf and Alabama football will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
