GPS and MBA in the “A’’ Division and Spain Park (girls) and University School of Jackson (boys) in the “B” Division are the leaders after the first day of the 54th Chattanooga Rotary Prep Tennis Tournament.
Saturday Finals: “A’’ Division for Boys’ and Girls’ are played at Baylor, with B Girls’ at GPS and B Boys’ at McCallie. All singles finals start at 8:30 a.m., followed by consolation singles, championship semis and finals in doubles.
A Girls' (at Baylor): The Bruisers with 13 points lead two-time defending Rotary champs Vestavia Hills (11), while Baylor (8.5) and defending TSSAA D-II state champion Hutchison (8) are in third and fourth, respectively, in the eight-team field. Webb (4), Harpeth Hall (3), Huntsville (3) and Mtn. Brook (1.5) are fifth through eighth.
Playing in a six singles/three doubles flighted format, GPS has four players in the championship singles and three teams in the doubles semis.
Vestavia Hills also has four in the singles finals and three in the doubles semis.
Head to Head: GPS and Vestavia Hills meet at Nos. 5-6 singles, plus No. 2 doubles in the semis.
Baylor’s three doubles teams advanced to the semis, but the Red Raiders have only one player alive in singles consolations (Sarah Berchuck at No. 3).
Hutchison has two in the singles finals and two in the doubles semis.
GPS singles finalists are defending Rotary champion Sarah Evans (A-1), Aliza Williams (A-3), Emma McCallie (A-5) and Lauren Schlabach (A-6).
Vestavia Hills singles finalists are Lauren Levant (A-2), Cameron Richard (A-3), Avery King (A-5) and Mary Elizabeth Harmon (A-6).
Key Bruiser Wins: At No. 4 singles, No. 3 Williams upset No. 1 Caroline Orr (Hutchinson) in the semis, while at No. 5, fourth-seeded McCallie also gained a spot in the finals.
Key Vestavia Hills Win: At No. 6, unseeded Harmon stopped No. 2 Amelia Sims (Hutchison) and No. 4 Kelly Scruggs (Baylor) to reach the finals.
No. 1s Advance: Five of the six top seeds are in the finals, with Hutchison’s Caroline Orr (A-4) the only one to fall in the semis.
A Boys’ at Baylor: In a three-team race, MBA (12.5) leads St. X and Baylor (11 pts. each), followed by Webb (7), Mtn. Brook (5), McCallie (3.5), Randolph (2.5) and Christian Academy of Knoxville (0.5).
MBA leads with four in the singles finals and three doubles in the semis, while Baylor has three in the singles finals and all three doubles teams in the semis.
St. X has two in the singles finals and three doubles teams in the semis. St. X sprinted to the lead (six points) with all six singles players winning in the quarters, but lost four of six semis matches.
MBA finalists are Palmer Campbell (A-3), Russ Anderson (A-4), Davis Thrailkill (A-5) and Andrew Karpos (A-6).
Baylor finalists are Aditya Rali (A-4), Alex Cooper (A-5) and Eric Roddy (A-6)
St. X finalists are Alex Gornet (A-1) and Sean Donohue (A-2).
Knocking Off Seeds: Unseeded Patrick Lucas (Mtn. Brook) had straight set wins against No. 2 Naveen Chadalavada (MBA) and No. 4 Kyle Coronel (St. X) to reach the finals.
A-1 Finals: Defending Rotary champ Dan Richardson (Randolph) is a three-time Alabama state champ (1A-3A) and will meet No. 4 Alex Gornet (St. X) who was a Kentucky state doubles champ in 2009. Gornet upset No. 1 seed and two-time TSSAA D-II singles champ Brandon Fickey (Webb), 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the semis.
No. 1s Advance: Four of the six top seeds are in the finals with Webb’s Brandon Fickey (A-1) and Brian Carman (A-3) both falling in the semis.
College Bound: Roger Briggs (MBA) is headed to Vandy, while teammate Naveen Chadalavada will play at Washington Univ. (St. Louis) … Randolph’s Dan Richardson has signed with Princeton … Sarah Evans (GPS) will play at Wofford.
Ready to Defend Titles: Defending champs Sarah Evans (GPS) and Dan Richardson (Randolph) are in the A-1 finals Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Palmer Campbell (MBA) is in the A-3 Boys' final (A-3 champ in 2009).
A pair of 2009 champs meet for the A-2 Girls' crown; Lauren Levant (Vestavia Hills) was the A-3 champ in 2009, while Kat Caire (Harpeth Hall) was the A-5 champ.
Singing Tennis Player: Kevin Kane, former director of the Sports Barn and former Yale Univ. tennis player, now works in New York and has a band – the Kevin Kane Band. The four-member band has produced three CDs. Kevin’s son, Dustin Kane, is the Baylor girls’ coach.
Marathon Match: The last match of the day was the longest as McCallie’s Daniel Pare-Evan Watkins defeated No. 4 Blake and Eric Buchalter (Mtn. Brook), 9-8 (14-12) in A-3 doubles.
Former Rotary Tourney Director Honored: Cindy Kemp Battle, former Rotary Tourney director and GPS tennis net star in the 1960s. was inducted into the GPS Athletics Hall of Fame during the school's Reunion Weekend Awards Luncheon on Friday.
