Chamberlain McAllester died on Thursday, October 27, 2011.
He was was born on Aug. 26, 1931. For the first 25 years of his life he lived in Chattanooga during the winter and on Lookout Mountain during the summer; and thereafter he lived only on Lookout Mountain. He was an attorney and a non-practicing certified public accountant. He worked for many years for the law firm of McAllester & McAllester when it was owned by Sam J. McAllester Jr. When Sam McAllester was appointed chief counsel for the Tennessee Department of Employment Security, Chamberlain McAllester and his twin brother, Robert M. McAllester, formed their own law firm. He was a member of the American, Tennessee, and Chattanooga Bar Associations, the American Institute of CPAs, and the Tennessee Society of CPAs. He was an administrative officer in the U.S. Air Force assigned to the Ninth Air Force, Shaw Field, Sumter, S.C. as an assistant group adjutant, and a squadron adjutant. After active duty he served in the Tennessee Air National Guard and the U.S. Air Force Reserve before retiring at an early age with the rank of major.
Subsequent to active duty in the U.S. Air Force, he was employed by the Electric Power Board for four years conducting customer surveys, investigations and dispute resolutions.
He was a graduate of Bright School, attended Baylor School, a graduate of Choate School, Wallingford, Conn., Yale University, New Haven, Conn., McKenzie College of Law and received a certificate of accounting from the University of Chattanooga. For four years he was an adjunct instructor of business law at the University of Chattanooga.
He was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Mountain Fairyland Club, Lookout Mountain Golf Club, Manker Patten Tennis Club, Chattanooga Ski Club, and the Chattanooga Quarterback Club.
He was an interim director of The Thomas Coca-Cola Company. During his earlier years his main hobby was aviation, which began in 1952 when he started flying as a member of the Yale Aviation Club at the New Haven, Conn., airport. While attending the University of Chattanooga at night he belatedly obtained a G.I. Bill grant and obtained an FAA-issued commercial-multi and single engine Instrument License.
His only immediate survivors are his identical twin brother, Robert M. McAllester; his nephew, William L. McAllester III; and his niece, Mrs. Winifred McAllester Lee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William L. McAllester and Winifred Ewing McAllester; his brother, William L. McAllester Jr.; and his sister, Ewing McAllester. His grandparents were Henry Overton Ewing and Minnie Chamberlain Ewing.
His family will receive friends at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain, from noon to 1 p.m. Monday followed by a service in the church at 1 p.m.
Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.
