David Robert Akers, 66, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. 

He was born April 26, 1947, in Knoxville, and grew up in Chattanooga, where he lived all of his adult life. David loved his church, Brainerd United Methodist, where he was very active as a lay leader, small group leader, and teacher of Sunday School and church services. He ran a basketball league at the church for more than 25 years; many will know him as Coach. 

David was an alumnus of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and continued to be a big supporter of the university and its sports programs.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Akers.

Survivors include his wife years, Donna Akers, son, James Akers, granddaughter, Ella Madison Akers, mother, Jean S. Akers, and sister, Joan Akers Scott and her husband, Robert Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Brainerd United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Dennis W. Flaugher. Interment will follow in the Brainerd United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday.
