Maudie McCowan Hines was born on March 11, 1917, in Camp Hill, Al., to the late George and Annie Liza McCowan. She was the 13th of 16 children. She departed this life on April 17, 2025.

She confessed Christ at an early age in Camp Hill and attended Sardis Baptist Church. As a young adult she relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and affiliated with Mount Paran Baptist Church. While worshipping there she met Virgil Hines.

In 1940 they were married and to that union four children were born. In 1953 they united with New Enon Missionary Baptist Church. At New Enon she faithfully served as the Director of the Sunshine Band and the Red Circle Girls, both were youth groups in the church. She taught Sunday School, was a member of the Martharette Club, and the Deaconess Ministry. She also served as the Church Clerk for many years. Her greatest devotion was to the Senior Ushers Ministry. She served in this ministry for more than 63 years and was the President for many of those years. During this time the Senior Ushers Ministry grew to a large number and became one of the largest and most active ministries in the church. She also started the Junior Ushers Ministry. This ministry also grew to large numbers. She led the Ushers Ministry in actively participating in the Chattanooga District Ushers Association. This resulted in them receiving numerous awards for attendance and participation at the local and state levels.

In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Virgil Hines and oldest son, Leroy Hines.

She is survived by her son, Ralph Hines and daughters, Joyce Hines Ryce and Linda Hines Elligan, all of Chattanooga, TN; daughter-in-law, Patricia Stokes Hines, Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Gerald Hines, Nashville, TN, Thomas (Natasha) Bonds, Winter Garden, FL; John (Nakeisha) Ryce, Chattanooga, TN; Toni Hines Craw, Chattanooga, TN; Michael Elligan, II, Orlando, FL; Kimberly (Reginald, II) Smith, Ooltewah, TN and Anton Hines, Nashville, TN; Sixteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends
