George F. Gross, 86, of Hixson, died on Thursday, October 23, 2014.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and a graduate of Soddy Daisy High School class of 1946.  After graduating from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering, he joined Combustion Engineering in 1946.  George spent 5 years in the Naval Reserves, and was drafted into the Army in 1954.  He spent two years at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, before being honorably discharged.  

He served in numerous industrial engineering, manufacturing, and production management positions.  George also served as vice president and managing director of Giddings & Lewis – Fraser Ltd.  He held a wealth of experience in general management of medium to heavy engineering industries.  He was responsible for operations in the United States, England, Mexico, Venezuela, and Indonesia.  He also served as vice president of manufacturing at Kearney & Trecker Corporation.  He held various general managers’ position with Combustion Engineering Corporation.  

George was a faithful member of Hixson First Baptist Church where he participated in golf tournaments, fishing trips, and local ministries. George was a leader in every area of his life.  In 1978, he was given the UTC School of Engineering’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.  George always inspired others to do above their greatest expectations. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Locklear Gross; his parents, Robert B. Gross, Sr. and Dora Lewis Gross of Bakewell, Tn.; brothers, Martin, Marvin, and Robert B. Gross, Jr.

George is survived by his children, Linda Gross Floyd and husband Jack of Soddy Daisy, Pamela Gross Taylor and husband David of Birmingham, AL, and Franklin Gross of Hixson; five grandchildren, Bonnie (Joel) Cordell, Brenci (Kevin) Fox, Sean (Ashley) Taylor, Ryan (Erica) Taylor, and Matthew (Mellissa) Taylor; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Lewis Gross; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, at the North Chapel.

A celebration of life service for George will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, at the North Chapel with Reverend Terry Shannon officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made in George’s name to Hixson First Baptist Church, 5800 Grubb Road, Hixson, Tn. 37343 or Bethel Bible Village, 3001 Hamill Road, Hixson, Tn. 37343. 

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
