The Navy plans to place armed guards at its operation centers around the country after a Hixson man killed four Marines and a Navy sailor at the local operations center on Amnicola Highway last month.

The Navy has asked Naval Reservists to volunteer to work at the centers beginning Aug. 17.

After the attack, some armed citizens began standing guard outside the centers, where military personnel are not allowed to have weapons. However, the military asked them to discontinue doing so.

Meanwhile, Lt. Commander Tim White is not expected to face charges for being armed with a weapon on the day of the local attack.

He fired several shots at the gunman, who rammed through a fence that is now heavily fortified.

Under current policy, military personnel at the center are not supposed to be armed.

Authorities also found a second weapon at the scene that did not belong to the gunman.
