Doris Messer
Doris Marie Messer, beloved mother and cherished grandmother, 89, went home to glory on Monday, December 4, 2017.
Doris was born on June 18, 1928 to the late Luther and Mattie Caylor. Doris and her second husband, Earl, owned and operated Messer’s Diner in Benton for several years. She was of the Primitive Baptist Faith. Doris was an avid reader and enjoyed growing flowers. In light of all of these, Doris will be remembered most for loving and caring for her family and how she enjoyed sharing meals with others, which was her “love language.”
In addition to her mother and father she was preceded in death in 1976 by her first husband of 31 years Loy P Whaley who is the father of her 6 children. Her second husband of 34 years, Earl Messer, passed away in 2011. She is also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Sandra Marie Whaley, who passed in 1950.
She is survived by 5 children: daughter Shirley Striker; four sons: David Whaley (Ralf), Joseph Whaley, Steve Whaley and daughter in love Mary, and Brent Whaley; nine grandchildren: Brian Whaley (Angie), Gina Moser, Starla Press, Scott Whaley, Lisa Bates, Angie Greene, Julie Theriot (Nick), Jarrod Whaley and Emily Whaley. She was GREAT Grandmother to 19: Heather Jackson (James), Brittany Moser, Becca Moser, Zach Caughron, AJ Caughron, Skye McDonnell, Jaden Rudy, Courtni Frey, Tanner Rudy, Ashley Baggett, Chloe Wallace, Marshall Theriot, Rose Bates, Stephanie Bates, Johnny Bates, Aaliyah Hickey, Trevon Hickey, Alexia Hickey, and Tevin Hickey. She was GREAT GREAT Grandmother to 9: Madison Jackson, James Jackson, Jr., Emma Moser, Owynn Simonson, Willow Frey, Jerome McDonnell, Samuel McDonnell, Denver Bates, and Gavin Bates.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, at Companion Funeral Home located at 2419 Georgetown RD NW, Cleveland, Tn. 37311. A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday Dec. 8, at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery.
