Chattanooga Housing Authority Plans Major Renovations In 2019

The Chattanooga Housing Authority announced plans to renovate 311 apartments beginning next spring. Because of this, approximately 100 residents will be relocated to other affordable housing options in the Chattanooga area.

Tammie Carpenter, director of the Housing Choice Voucher Program said, “Residents who are eligible for the Housing Choice Voucher Program will be offered a voucher that can be used to provide housing during this time.  The best fit for our residents would be properties located near bus lines to allow them to work or attend school.” 

The Housing Voucher Choice Program is a federal government program for assisting low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.

CHA Board Chairman Jim Levine said, “The CHA has been very effective in utilizing this program as they’ve planned for change. As a board, we’re very mindful of the bottom line to the organization. Renovating these 311 units is a wise use of funds and will assist in making CHA communities better places to live.” 

Among the units being renovated are 200 apartments at Cromwell Hills and 111 located at Glenwood North and East, Woodside Apartments and Missionary Heights.

The CHA is hosting a luncheon on Thursday to share their plans with interested property owners and rental managers.  The meeting will be held at the CHA’s Central Office at 801 North Holtzclaw Avenue at noon.  RSVPs may be made by contacting Ed@CHAHousing.org.  Those who are interested in participating but unable to attend, are also encouraged to contact Ed@CHAHousing.org.  A second meeting may be convened based upon interest.

CHA Executive Director Betsy McCright said, “The renovations we’re making will make our communities better places to live; however, we couldn’t do this important work without strong partners.  We look forward to working with the community to provide housing options for our residents.”
