A car went into Nickajack Lake at Haletown on Monday afternoon. A man inside the car died, but a four-year-old girl in the vehicle was rescued by a passerby.

The incident happened near Anchor Inn Bait & Tackle on Highway 41.

A witness who saw the incident unfold said there was another vehicle at the scene. The witness said two men jumped into that vehicle and sped away.

The sports car occupied by the man and girl backed into the water, the witness said.

A woman who was driving by saw the young girl bobbing in the water. She  dived in and was able to get her to shore.

The child was taken to the hospital in Chattanooga, but was reportedly okay.

The man's body was taken to Nashville for an autopsy.
