Longtime Pediatric Cardiologist In Chattanooga

Dr. John Ronald Morgan of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was born on March 29, 1940, in Fort Payne, Alabama, to the late Ronald Rudolph and Miriam Josephine Morgan and passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.

Dr. Morgan is survived by his loving wifeof 57 years, Donna Louise (Gardner)Morgan, his sister, Mary Jo McKelvey, his daughter, Susan (Glenn) Record, and his sons, David (Dorinea) Morgan, Michael (Brooke) Morgan and Stephen (Tracy) Morgan. In addition, John was blessed to be the beloved “Poppa” to nine grandchildren, Kevin (Marla) Record, Scott (Larken) Record, Julie Record, Luke Morgan, Brooke Morgan, AJ Morgan, Gretchen Morgan, Shelby Morgan and Whitney Jane Morgan.

Dr. Morgan graduated from Lafayette High School and then went on to earn his degree from David Lipscomb College in 1962. Following graduation, he attended Vanderbilt Medical School where he received his medical degree.  Following his pediatric internship at Vanderbilt, Dr. Morgan spent two years in the Air Force stationed at Eglin Air Force base in Fort Walton Beach.  He then spent two years in Gainesville at the University of Florida in a Fellowship for Pediatric Cardiology.  In 1972, the family moved to Chattanooga, where he joined T.C. Thompson’s Children Hospital of Erlanger Medical Center in the practice of Pediatric Cardiology, where he served as the sole pediatric cardiologist for the region for most of his career. Chattanooga was his home for the next 47 years.

A beloved husband, father, physician, mentor, friend, and follower of Christ, Dr. Morgan was an active leader in the community in a variety of ways.  A member of Brainerd Church of Christ for over 40 years, and later East Brainerd Church of Christ, he served as a Deacon and an Elder for several decades. He also served on the Board of Boyd-Buchanan School for many years, including serving a term as Chairman. Dr. Morgan had a love for the outdoors including backpacking, water skiing, and golf and helped foster that in many ways with his sons by serving as a volunteer leader of Boy Scout Troop 30.

A celebration of life service will be at held at East Brainerd Church of Christ on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m., with visitation at 2 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Boyd-Buchanan School.
