County Commission Does Not Go Along With Boyd Idea For Community Reinvestment Fund

  • Wednesday, May 1, 2019

The County Commission on Wednesday did not go along with an idea by Commissioner Tim Boyd to use some proceeds from the hotel/motel tax proceeds to set up a new Community Reinvestment Fund.

He did not get a second on the motion.

Barry White, president of the Chattanooga Visitors Bureau, made a presentation citing the importance of the marketing effort by the CVB.

He also said the agency has been overhauled during the past 14 months.

Commissioner Boyd had said the CVB would have continued to receive $8.5 million for annual marketing, but that overage in the escalating fund could be used for capital projects related to tourism.

County Mayor Jim Coppinger had cautioned about the move, saying commission members may have been inundated with funding requests.

In other action, the commission approved $350,000 to supplement the budget of the Criminal Court Clerk.

Vince Dean said funds were down sharply in the wake of a federal judge ruling that governmental agencies could not hold driver's licenses of those who owed court costs.
