City Council Considering $500,000 For Last Section Of South Chickamauga Creek Greenway

  • Friday, May 31, 2019

The City Council on June 11 will consider a resolution to provide $500,000 toward construction of the final section of the South Chickamauga Greenway.

Officials said, "This project is a one-mile greenway trail extension from the Lightfoot Mill Road Trailhead, south to Caine Lane, running parallel to Youngstown Road and South Chickamauga Creek.

"This last section of a 25-year plan led by TPL to preserve the South Chickamauga Creek and provide a 12-mile natural area greenway corridor, will connect to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and surrounding neighborhoods including Cromwell Hills.

"Traversing possibly the toughest terrain of the greenway corridor, the project renders a memorable trail experience."

Officials also said the city is underway in design for two other greenway sections, on each end of this project section - the Youngstown Section and Caine Lane Section.

The $500,000 would be paid to The Trust for Public Land, which long has been heading up the local greenway program.

Officials said the money was previously appropriated to the Department of Economic and Community Development, with the city’s contribution equaling approximately 20 percent of the
total project cost of the Cromwell Hills Greenway Trail Extension.
